La Somme a été profondément touchée par les combats de la Première Guerre mondiale : l'invasion d'août et la course à la mer de septembre 1914, la bataille de la Somme de juillet à novembre 1916 et les batailles de Picardie de mars à Septembre 1918. Aujourd'hui, cette page mouvementée de l'histoire se découvre en suivant le Circuit du Souvenir, jalonné de mémoriaux , de vestiges de combats, et de cimetières.

The Somme sulfered verely in the battles of the First World War : the invasion and the "race to the sea" in september 1914 , the battle of the Somme in July November 1916 and the battles of Picardy from march until september 1918. Today , this dramatic period of history can be explored by following the Circuit of Remembrance with this impressive memorials, traces of battles and its cemeteries. Castle of Vadancourt have been strongly been related to war, by its prisonneers in the castle during war.

Memorial Sud Africain - South African Memorial
A longueval, le musée et le mémorial sud africains rendent hommage aux soldatssud-africains qui connurent leur baptême du feu dans le bois Delville, rebaptisé "Devil's wood". Sur les 3200 hommes qui participèrent à l'attaque du 15 juillet 1916, seuls 143 revinrent indemme 5 jours plus tard.

At Longueval, the South-African national memorial and museum honour the South African troops who underwent their baptem of fire in delville Wood, known as "Devil's wood". Of the 3200 men who went into the attack of 1(th of luly 1916, only 143 came out unharmed 5 days later.

Musée "Somme 1916" - the "Somme 1916" Museum
A Albert, le musée "Somme 1916" retrace la vie des soldats dans les tranchées lors de l'offensive du 1er juillet 1916. Une quinzaine d'alcôves et dse vitrines sont installées dans un souterrain de 230 mètres utilisé comme abri anti-aérien lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. Bruitages, images et lumières plongent les visiteurs dans le quotidien vécu par ces soldats.

In Albert, the "somme 1916" Museum displays life in the trenches at the time of the offensive on 1 july 1916. Some fifteen alcoves and sow-cases are set out along 230 metre underground passage which was used as an air-raid shelter during the second world war. Sound effects, pictures and lighting plunge visitors into the soldiers daily life.

Doullens - Armistice Somme Battlefield
A Doullens, dans la mairie, la Salle du commandement unique évoque le tourant de l'histoire de la grand guerre - le 26 mars 1918, en ce lieu, les gouvernements français et britannique confient au général Foch le commandement des Forces Alliées qui conduira à la contre offensive du 8 aout et à l'Armistice du 11 novembre 1918.

At Doullens the town hall contains the Hall of the "sole command", recalling the turning-point in the sitory of the Great War : on 26 march 1918 in this room , The french and british governments put into General Foch's hands the sole command of the Allied forces which would lead to the counter-offensive on 8 august and the Armistice of 11 november 1918.

Villers-Bretonneux
A Villers-Bretonneux, le 25 avril 1918, les Australiens arrêtent les troupes allemandes. Le Mermorial national australien ( où se déroule chaque année la commémoration de l'Anzac day le samedi le plus proche du 25 avril ), le Musée franco - australien, le cimetière Adélaide témoignent de la force des liens et de la reconnaissance mutuelle qui unissent l'Australie et de la France. A voir également, à Le Hamel, village proche, l'"Australian corps memorial park" ( mémorial, vestiges de tranchées, itinéraire balisé de panneaux d'interprétation ).

At Villers-Bretonneux, on 25 april 1918, the Australians halted the german army. The National Australian Memorial ( the site each year of the commemoration of Anzac Day ) the Franco Autralian museum and Adelaide cemetery are proof of the strengh and mutual recognition between Australia and France.
In the small nearby village of Le Hamel, the australian corps memorial park has a memorial, traces of trenches and a way-marked itineray with information boards.

Thiepval - Memorial franco British
A Thiepval, le Mémorial franco-britannique, à l'architecture impressionnante ( 45 mètres de haut) est visible à des kilomètres à la ronde. Il porte sur ses pilierse l'inscription de 73 367 noms de soldats morts au front et qui n'ont pas de sépultures connues. Un centre d'accueil et d'interprétation fournit aux visiteurs les clés nécessaires à la compréhension de l'hitoire de Thiepsal au cours de la Première guerre mondiale.

At Thiepval, the impressive bulk of the Franco British memorial ( 45 meters high ) is visible for many kilometers around. The piliers bear the carved names of 73 267 men, the "misssing of the Somme" who died in the battles of the Somme and who have no kwown graves. A reception and study centre provides visitors with the necessary keys to understanding the history of thipval during the First World War.. Close by, the Ulster Tower is the replics of a tower near the city of Belfast in the training camp of the 36e division. ON 1july 1916 the division was caught between artillery fire from the german and the british guns.

La Boisselle
A La Boisselle, le "lochnagar crater", impressionnant trou de mine , de 100 mètres de diamètre, et de 30 mètres de profondeur, est un vestige de la série d'explosions qui se déroule le 1er juillet 1916. Ici, elle eut lieu à 7h28 marquant ainsi le déclenchement de la bataille de la somme par les britanniques.

La Boisselle has the Lochnagar Crater, an impressive mine hole 100 meters accross and 30 metres deep, the remaining mark of the series of explosions on 1 july 1916. Here, at 7:28 am , it marked the launching of the battled of the Somme by the british troops.

A Péronne, l'Historial de la Grande Guerre est le musée de référence de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il permet de mieux comprendre les causes, les conséquences et le déroulement du conflit, la vie quotidienne au front et à l'arrière, les dimensions politique, sociale et culturelle de cette guerre totale qui a conditionné le XXe siècle. In Péronne, the Historial of the Great War is the central reference museum for the first World war. It offers a better understanding of the causes, consequences, and events of the war, daily life in the front line and behind the lines - all the cultural , socail and political features of this overwhelming war which shalped the twentieth century. There is also the picturesque town of Peronne to explore, surrounded by the pools and lagoons of the valley of the Somme.
